The University of Cincinnati (UC), Department of Athletics seeks applications for an Assistant Coach in the Men’s and Women’s Track & Field and Cross Country program. The primary responsibility for this role is to coach the men’s distance group. The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree, Level II Coaching Certification, USTFCCCA Specialist Distance Events Certification, USTFCCCA Meet Management Certification. This is a full-time position, salaried, with a comprehensive benefits package. 


The University of Cincinnati track and field program dates to 1892 and is the second-oldest athletics program at the University. Over the years, the Bearcats have won 13 conference team championships, 84 combined individual championships indoors, 162 combined individual titles outdoors along with five cross country champions. Thirty-one student-athletes have combined to win 59 All-America honors and Annette Echikunwoke earned the program's first National Championship in 2017, winning the indoor weight throw. Olympic medalists Mary Wineberg (gold) and David Payne (silver) succeeded on the sport's biggest stage in 2008 in Beijing, China.


The Cincinnati Bearcats compete at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics as a member of the American Athletic Conference. UC fields 18 varsity teams with over 500 student-athletes supported by over 150 full-time staff on the award-winning UC campus in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Bearcats have won seven national championships and 113 conference championships during its proud history. Numerous luminaries and Olympians have worn UC's red and black through the years including hall of fame legends Sandy Koufax, Oscar Robertson and Jack Twyman.  


UC student-athletes averaged a 3.400 GPA in the fall of 2020 with 78 percent of our student-athletes earning spots on the honor roll.

Job Overview

Responsible for several administrative and organizational aspects of coaching, recruiting, and competition while following all departmental, university, conference, and NCAA policies and regulations.

Essential Functions

Direct involvement with several administrative and organizational aspects of a sport program under the supervision of the Head Coach (i.e., coaching, practice, recruiting, strategy, planning travel, team meals, etc). 

Execute all coaching assignments and administrative responsibilities. May analyze data, chart plays and tendencies.

Maintain current knowledge of and adhere to all University, NCAA and Conference Rules and Regulations, Policies and Procedures paying special attention to recruiting, eligibility, admissions and financial aid.

May supervise assigned positional student-athletes in a coordinated and planned program of practices and competition, with a concern for the players’ health and welfare, physical and psychological preparation. 

May recruit and/or coordinate the recruitment of prospective academically and athletically qualified student-athletes 

Guide and actively encourage student-athletes to succeed academically, earn a degree and represent the university with integrity. Uphold all University academic policies and assist, when appropriate, in counseling student-athletes relative to academic success, progress and eligibility. 

May participate in public and alumni relations and promotions activities and assist in establishing and maintaining positive relations with the media.

Assist the Head Coach in cultivating and soliciting donors to meet the fundraising goals as established by the Director of Athletics. 

Collaborate with support staff to implement and perform administrative tasks in line with program and departmental goals. 

May be required to drive a university vehicle and/or student-athletes. 

May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).

Minimum Requirements

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree

Four (4) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Trainings/Certifications

Must be able to pass and maintain NCAA recruiting certification if required by sport program.

Valid driver’s license.
