This important role will support the engineering, construction, project management and maintenance of utility transmission and distribution facilities.  Develop, document, and implement standards and processes impacting the reliable operation of the utility.  Create specifications and design details for transmission and distribution projects, as assigned.

SALARY GRADE:  Level II:  $68,480-$102,750, Level Sr. $74,800-$112,200, Level Lead: $80,400-$120,600 (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Independently plan, design, manage, and provide engineering oversight for major capital transmission line projects including new construction, rebuilds, realignments, and structure replacements. 
  • Create detailed engineering reports, drawing packages, cost estimates, specifications, bid documents, and material lists for the construction and maintenance of transmission line facilities. 
  • Assist in the routing, budgeting, permitting, and design of new transmission lines.
  • Monitor the construction of assigned transmission line projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and safety procedures. 
  • Develop best practices for distribution line design and provide engineering support to Operations and Construction Planning teams. 
  • Develop transmission and distribution structures and design criteria standards within our line design software
  • Anticipate and solve a range of problems using standard procedures.  Learn to develop solutions and implement actions.
  • Adapt and contribute to department goals and priorities to address business and operational challenges.  
  • Utilize project management skills to support and/or lead projects as assigned. 
  • Provide engineering support to cross-functional teams.
  • Participate and lead continuous improvement initiatives to improve processes and standards. 
  • Assist with the analysis of new LiDAR data to maintain compliance with company procedures.
  • Support transmission line maintenance work through aerial line patrols and lead remediation efforts as needed.
  • Provide engineering support in addressing unplanned or emergency outages on the transmission system. 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Actively coordinate with other work groups in order to achieve mutual goals. 
  • Maintain a safe work environment through proficient knowledge of Black Hills Energy’s safety policies, procedures, and stop work authority. 
  • Complete all assigned training tasks and take initiative to seek out continuous improvement and development opportunities. 
  • Be responsive to internal and external customers and establish positive, professional relationships throughout Black Hills Energy.
  • Comply with industry standards and regulations.
  • Perform work in close proximity to energized electrical facilities. 
  • Perform other special work assignments as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Level II:

  • Three or more years of engineering experience in a utility or related industry, or in related electrical system design is required.
  • Prior experience with transmission and distribution systems is helpful.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required.

Level Sr. 

  • Five or more years of experience in the design and implementation of electric utility transmission and distribution systems is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required. Electrical engineering degree preferred. 
  • Power systems emphasis preferred.
  • Energy industry experience preferred.

Level Lead:

  • Seven or more years of experience in the design and implementation of electric utility transmission and distribution systems is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required. Electrical engineering degree preferred. 
  • Power systems emphasis preferred.
  • Energy industry experience preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration or the ability to become registered is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Good working knowledge of the design, construction, and maintenance of electric utility transmission and distribution systems.
  • Familiarity with the National Electric Safety Code and electric utility industry safety work practices. 
  • Understanding of electric transmission and distribution drawings and schematics.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills and the ability to interact in a team environment.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in PLS-CADD and Microsoft Office Suite - Excel, Word, Project, Visio, Power Point and Outlook.
  • Ability to maintain proficiency with new systems and software as technology evolves.
  • Ability to work concurrently on multiple projects independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to organize, document and track projects and work goals.
  • Self-motivated with a desire to learn diverse topics and skills.

Mental Requirements: Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level, and occasionally outdoors in sometimes inclement weather. Worker may be subject to hazards including variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working in places of height, or close quarters.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously (67% or more) required to: use fingers and hands, communicate, and have close visual acuity. Employee must be able to operate routine office equipment including computers and similar equipment. Must be able to routinely perform this work for an average of 6-8 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or continuously to lift, carry, push, pull or sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Work environment: Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level. Must be capable of up to 10% travel (e.g. 2 days/month) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities. Travel will be necessary to conduct the duties of this job, and the employee must have the ability to drive and have proper licensing.
