Job Summary:

The cardiac surgery service at Medical City Dallas cares for high acuity patients who are waiting for or have undergone coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacement surgery, transcatheter valve replacement, aortic dissection or aneurysm repair, left-ventricular assist device implantation and heart transplantation. Ideal candidates would be familiar with these procedures and able to perform preoperative consultation and preoperative and postoperative management of patients who have had these procedures. Postoperative care involves both ICU management and discharges from PCU floor. This not an OR position. 

The Acute Care Nurse Practitioner/Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP/AGACNP) or The Physician Assistant (PA) develops and maintains an active practice based on an expanded knowledge base of pathophysiology and pharmacology to provide comprehensive health assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals with cardiothoracic surgery needs in collaboration with and under the direct supervision of attending physician(s). Additional PA/NP roles include clinical procedures, education, consultation, and research under the direction of attending physician(s) and in accordance with approved protocols.  Other duties as assigned. 


Medical City Heart Hospital and Medical City Spine Hospital are destination hospitals for highly specialized advanced cardiovascular and spine care. The new state of the art facility is conveniently located near Medical City Dallas across Hwy. 75 and Forest Lane. Medical City Heart Hospital will have 63 private patient rooms and provide a wide array of cardiac services including complex vascular and heart surgery, advanced heart failure treatment, minimally invasive vascular surgery and other specialized heart care. The 24-bed Medical City Spine Hospital will provide comprehensive and coordinated spine care for common spine disorders and rare, hard-to-treat spinal deformities including adult and pediatric scoliosis, spondylolistheses, complex spine surgery and minimally invasive surgical options among others.

  • Successful completion of an accredited Acute Care Nurse Practitioner/Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program
  • MSN required for Nurse Practitioner candidate
  • BS degree, MS preferred for Physician Assistant candidates
  • 2 years of ACNP/PA experience in a CVICU, or similar ICU, required - (PCU/Cardiac Tele)
  • Current RN and APRN license in the State of Texas or current Texas Physician Assistant License
  • Certification as an ACNP/AGACNP by the ANCC and/or the AANP or Certification as a PA by the NCCPA or NP-C if employed as NP prior to 2015.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS provider
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross ACLS provider
  • Prescriptive Authority/DEA# within 1 year of hire or transfer.
