Job Summary

The Histology Technician performs all repetitive tests that necessitate knowledge of histological technique and related instruments.  Performs cyto prep as needed.  Exhibits the ability to recognize factors that directly affect procedures and results.  Uses and monitors quality control programs and performs simple instrument maintenance.  Attends and assists with direct patient care procedures as needed.  Assists in the training of others as assigned.  Demonstrates self-motivation in performing job duties and following procedures.

3.Actively participates in and achieves an acceptable level of performance on proficiency and competency testing samples.  (EF)
4.Recognizes problems, notifies management of issue, and follows up as directed by management.  (EF)
5.Maintains a safe environment within the Laboratory, following all policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials, security, emergency preparedness and HIPAA.  (EF)

1.Adjusts work schedule to accommodate departmental/organizational needs.  Appropriately utilizes the time recording system.  (EF)
2.Uses resources efficiently; does not waste supplies.  (EF)

o Associate degree in related field if certified after December 31, 2004

o No experience required; one year experience as a Histology Technician highly preferred

o Must meet certification eligibility upon hire and have one of the following required certifications within one year of employment:
oHT,(ASCP) - Certified as a Histology Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
oHTL,(ASCP) - Certified as a Histology Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
o Note: current HM Histology Technicians have 12 months from this job description revision date to acquire certification

to perform the Essential Functions of the Job
o Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going evaluations consisting of one or more of the following: skills, competency assessments and/or performance reviews
o Possesses basic computer knowledge; operates multiple computer systems to include, Hospital / Laboratory Information Systems and Office software to maintain patient and testing records and other related documents
o Exhibits strong interpersonal and team player skills with all levels of the healthcare team and assures delivery of excellent customer service to all patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers
o Adapts to multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision including, organizing work flow and actively participating in problem-solving
o Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
o Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
