Job Description:
We are seeking a Network Engineer Advisor to join our team to support National Institute of Health. (NIH) Center for Information Technology supporting world-class biomedical research at NIH by delivering Information Technology services and products that ensure NIH scientists and administrative staff receive the IT support they need.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Works with Network Engineers to ensure network devices are deployed in a secure and compliant configuration and monitored effectively
- Works with customers and engineers to perform forensic data analysis and packet captures of traffic to assist in troubleshooting efforts across the network.
- Manages Network Monitoring Infrastructure, primarily including PerfSonar, Cisco Stealthwatch and Riverbed Steel Central implementations.
- Evaluates new communications technologies to enhance capabilities of the network
- Responds to customer tickets and work on projects as assigned.

In this role, a typical day will include:
- Configure Cisco switches, routers, and other devices to remediate security & compliance issues
- Work with customers and engineers to perform data analysis and packet captures of traffic to assist in troubleshooting efforts across the network.
- Operate and maintain the health of the network security system architecture, including system monitoring and logging
- Evaluate new communications technologies to enhance capabilities of the network
- Respond to customer tickets and work on projects as assigned.
- Coordinate the acquisition of hardware and software as needed.
- Performs training of staff on tool solutions.
Required Qualifications
- BS/BA (or equivalent) and five years ITexperience
- Five or more years supporting Network Infrastructure, preferably Cisco
- Experience with implementing network security configurations.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Experience with Microsoft Visio, or other similar tools used for network design.
- Ability to obtain a Public Trust
Desired Qualifications
- Minimum of three years working on Linux Servers
- Experience with Splunk logging server.
- Experience with programming languages and tools such as Python, Perl, and WebAPIs
- Expertise with data analysis solution like Riverbed SteelCentral and/or Cisco Stealthwatch
- Experience managing PerfSonar implementation.
- Experience with Cisco ISE
- Experience with VMWare virtual servers
