POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Charge nurse provides direct nursing care in accordance with established policies and procedures of Las Palmas Medical Center and the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.  In collaboration with the patient, the patient's family and other members of the health care team, the clinical RN assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and coordinates treatment plans.  In collaboration with the leadership team, the charge nurse will help enforce policies and procedures within the unit.

 

POPULATION SERVED:

Core competencies will be assessed primarily on the following patient population(s) served:  Triage, assess and treat patients of all ages presenting for emergency care for all body systems, conditions & diseases including but not limited to: Coronary, Pulmonary, Neuro, Skeletal-muscular, GI/metabolic, GU/renal, GYN, integumentary, etc.

  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of advance patient care, to include vital signs, venipuncture, urinary catherization, cardiac .monitoring, nasogastric tube insertion, medication administration as per the medical provider, ACLS and 12 lead EKG.
  •  Blood glucose monitoring, patient transfers – lifts, immobilization techniques, basic wound care and dressing changes, assist with emergency procedures and equipment/supplies, pulse oximetry monitoring and oxygen delivery device application.
  • Monitors and recognizes changes in the patient’s behavioral and physiological status and takes appropriate action based on assessment.
  • Utilizes professional skills and judgment to perform assigned nursing treatments and procedures for a group of patients.
  • Monitors and manages the departmental flow within the emergency room.
  • Collaborates with all departments to facilitate transition of care.
  • Complies with all National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Manages staffing needs for the department which include calling in staff or flexing staff out.
  • Monitors all transfers that go out and come into our emergency room.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and respect of the patient’s right to privacy and protection of patient confidentiality
  • Practices, endorses and provides customer service skills to patients, visitors, physicians and staff.
  • Knowledge with 100% compliance of Core Measures in the Emergency Department  
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

 

 

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

 

RN licensed in State of Texas or compact license

BCLS

ACLS

PALS or ENPC

TNCC or ATCN

All certifications/licenses must be renewed before the expiration date

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

 

   Associate degree in Nursing or Bachelors Degree in Nursing

 

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Preferred experience as RN of 1-2 years in Emergency Department
  • Specialty certification/training as appropriate
  • Read and write basic English with the basic skills necessary to understand and transfer physician’s orders
  • Bilingual a plus
  • Ability to move an excess of 100 pounds with assistance from other staff
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written
  • Computer skills
  • Ability to work as a team member with a team to ensure quality patient care.
