Job Title:  Data Scientist – IP Analytics

We are looking for a Data Scientist to support our Intellectual Property (IP) Analytics team in the Global Legal Department promoting legal, technical and commercial initiatives across the company’s business activities. The position is located at Applied Materials Singapore.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities 

Primary responsibilities involve analyzing highly complex data to drive impactful business decisions for clients in Applied’s business units; by designing, defining and implementing metrics, creating dashboards, establish causal relationships with statistics, data visualization and making recommendations on emerging AI/ML models.

As a member of the IP Analytics team, you will collaborate globally across Applied’s legal, engineering, product development, business and marketing groups to understand their data needs, scope the problem, pinpoint the critical data, perform ETL, cleaning and pre-processing on the data, select appropriate metrics, develop models, design dashboards and other interactive data visualization resulting in tangible analytics insights. You will identify new areas of opportunity by conducting deep dives on available data and making recommendations to the business and legal teams.

You will evaluate and deploy new digital tools for technology enablement and data-enabled insight for the IP and legal department. You will leverage your strong collaboration skills and ability to extract valuable information from highly complex unstructured data sets allowing the business to leverage data-enabled insight.

Qualification & Work Experience

  • Bachelor degree or higher in a relevant field such as mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science or data science

  • Experience with languages used for querying (e.g. Hive/Spark/SQL), preprocessing (e.g. Unix/Python), and/or statistical analysis (e.g. R/Python)

  • Experience with data analysis in a business context and familiarity with onboarding and/or deployment of AI/ML models from 3rd party vendors desirable

  • Prior knowledge of patent law, experience with an in-house multinational IP Department or IP law office would be an asset

Skills & Competencies 

  • Strong fundamentals of applied data science in a business setting and should be capable of communicating data science solutions to business stakeholders

  • Strong analytical capability, ability to think critically and possessing learning agility to quickly attain understanding of new technology areas

  • Strong ability to distill complex scientific and technical concepts into actionable analysis

  • Proactive, thorough, working with high accuracy and attention to detail with good time management

  • Adaptability to changing priorities and project focus while remaining flexible in shifting conditions

  • Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally and scientifically diverse backgrounds and collaborate effectively with other team members

  • Excellent English written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, additional Asian language an asset

  • Proficiency in basic software applications such as spreadsheet, word processing and powerpoint
