Registered Nurse (RN)  – Wound Care (WOCN)

HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake is a full-service hospital offering a 531 bed inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and specialty services. The campus includes Level II trauma capabilities, a Neuroscience Institute, The Heart & Vascular Hospital, a bariatrics program, the Breast Diagnostic Center, a wound care center, a level III Neonatal ICU, and the area’s only pediatric emergency department and pediatric ICU.  

HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake is affiliated with HCA Houston Healthcare, part of the HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division. The division is a comprehensive network of hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, emergency centers and diagnostic imaging facilities in greater Houston, Corpus Christi and South Texas. Facilities include: 17 hospitals, nine ambulatory care centers, 13 off-campus emergency centers, and a regional transfer center.  

What you will do in this role:

  •  Initiate a nursing assessment of patient’s condition upon admission.
  • Recognize and assess initial alterations in the patient’s body systems and verbalize this to other members of the health care team.
  • Organize assessment data for accuracy, completeness and confidentiality.
  • Record assessment data in an orderly fashion and communicate, revise and verbalize pertinent information to other health care team members.
  • Assess, stage, and measure wounds accurately and in accordance with policy.
  • Photograph wounds according to policy and procedure.










What qualifications you will need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Graduate from an accredited Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Education Program or must enroll in a recognized Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse program within 6 months of hire.
  • Required: Two years registered nursing experience.
  • Required: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing License (RN). Basic Life Support (BCLS)
  • requires either:
  • Wound and ostomy certified BSN RN, with >2yrs direct complex wound management, and ostomy post op management & teaching experience within the acute care setting
  • Qualified certifications upon hire include:
    1. CWON,  -or-   CWOCN:   certified wound and ostomy nurse -or-  certified wound ostomy & continence nurse
    2. WCC & OMS:   wound care certification -and- ostomy management specialist certification
    3. CWS & OMS:   certified wound specialist certification -and- ostomy management specialist certification
    4. CWCA & OMS: certified wound care associate –and- ostomy management specialist certification
  • Cert experience “ready” upon hire, and completion of wound and ostomy course & certifications by 6 months of hire (self-funded):
    • Certifications needed w/in 6 m hire include:
      1. CWON  -OR- CWOCN  
      2. WCC & OMS  
      3. CWS & OMS
      4. CWCA & OMS
  • Required eligibility upon hire for option (b):

  • CWON or CWOCN eligibility experience requirements upon hire (via exam WOCNB boards):
    • Pathway#1: Graduate from accredited WOC nursing education program within last 5 yrs  
    • Pathway #2: Application accepted by WOCNB for CWON: Completion of 3000 direct patient hours in wound and ostomy & 50 CE directly applying to wound and ostomy, validated by CWOCN Preceptor.
    • Pathway #3: Application accepted by WOCNB for CWOCN: Completion of 4500 direct patient hours in wound, ostomy and continence care, validated by CWOCN Preceptor.
  • OMS Cert eligibility experience requirements upon hire: Validation by professional reference of FT (40hr) prior employment for 1 yr w/in last 5 yrs with involvement active consultation/care for ostomy patients) (via exam board: NAWCO)  
  • WCC Cert eligibility experience requirements upon hire: Validation by professional reference of FT (40hr) prior employment for 1 yr w/in last 5 yrs with involvement active consultation/care for complex wounded patients) (via exam board: NAWCO)  
  • CWS Cert eligibility experience requirements upon hire: BSN. Validation by professional reference 3 or more years of clinical wound care experience -active consultation/care for complex wounded patients) (via exam board: ABWM)
  • CWCS Cert eligibility experience requirements upon hire: RN. Validation by professional reference 3 or more years of clinical wound care experience -active consultation/care for complex wounded patients) (via exam board: ABWM)
