Position Description

The Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator Facility (ATLAS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is seeking a senior electrical engineer with considerable experience in radio frequency (RF) electronics.  ATLAS is the world’s first heavy ion superconducting linear accelerator, and for over three decades has operated as a user facility to explore the frontiers of nuclear physics and applications.

The successful candidate will work with a collaborative team of physicists, engineers, and technicians to develop devices to manipulate and deliver heavy ion beams for experiments.  This position requires a strong understanding of the foundations of RF engineering and electronics design.  In general, the candidate will be involved with the design, fabrication, and operation of RF systems needed to drive and control resonant cavities for the acceleration, bunching, and chopping of high energy, heavy ion beams.

RF systems and discrete components associated with this position include:

  • Amplifiers (6 - 110 MHz, up to 100 kW)
  • Low-level RF feedback and control
  • Resonator frequency and phase control
  • Master frequency generation and distribution
  • Frequency mixers
  • Power combiners/dividers
  • Phase shifters
  • IQ modulators

This position is also responsible for some analog, DC electronic systems (regulated high voltage and current power supplies) and related components (operational amplifiers, analog multipliers, bipolar and FET transistors, and analog switches/multiplexers).

Position Requirements

As you will be working with a small project team and regularly interacting with operations staff, excellent communication and teamwork skills are essential.  You must be a flexible, results-oriented problem-solver who requires minimal supervision.  Projects can vary greatly from one to the next and the successful applicant must thrive in taking on new challenges.

Depending on the level of experience, this position may be responsible for supervising the work of other engineers or technicians. 

Required experience:

  • Discrete RF circuit design
  • Use of RF test and measurement equipment
  • General electronics design and fabrication
  • PCB design

Preferred experience:

  • RF simulation tools
  • Particle accelerator systems
  • Resonant cavities
  • Digital electronics

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD2 or RD3) dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills brought to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience. The requirements of the various levels are as follows:

  • At a RD2 Level: Bachelor’s and 5+ years, or Master’s and 3+ years, or Doctorate and 0 years.
  • At a RD3 Level: Bachelor’s and 8+ years, Master’s and 5+ years, or Doctorate and 4+ years.
