Michael BakerInternational’s Construction Services staff supports clients by acting as theirtrusted on-site agent through all phases of construction, from pre-design toclose-out, by providing qualified construction managers, inspectors,constructability reviewers, schedulers, estimators and safety experts. Asnew technologies evolve throughout the construction industry, innovative ideasare required to maintain and deliver successful construction projects.


The Construction Inspector willserve as a key member of the firm’s growing construction management disciplineby working as an employee of the Dearborn, MI office on inspection projects throughoutthe Metro Detroit area. The successful candidate will lead the inspectionservices on road and bridge projects for MDOT and other Local Agency Program(LAP) clients, as well as for improvements to airport airside and landsideprojects. Between field assignments, this position may involve design taskssuch as constructability reviews of plans for upcoming projects as well asassisting technical staff during plan preparation.

  • Review plans and specifications associated withassigned work on active construction contracts
  • Notify project engineer or project supervisor ofapparent constructability issues or errors in plans
  • Oversee daily operations of contractor orsubcontractor personnel to ensure that work is being performed in accordancewith plans and specifications
  • Answer basic contractor questions about plan andspecification requirements
  • Identify contractor means and methods that areinconsistent with plans and specifications, and discuss needed changes with thecontractor as well as the project engineer or project supervisor
  • Make measurements and observations of work beingperformed to ensure accurate quantities are tracked for completed work
  • Prepare detailed field drawings or electronic templatesto support the calculations being used to justify the pay quantities
  • Monitor material testing needs associated with workbeing performed
  • Understandand apply testing frequencies for various materials used on the contract toensure that enough tests are being taken to cover the work performed
  • Electronicallydocument pay quantities, material requirements, and contractor staff in aninspector’s daily report using MDOT Field Manager
  • HighSchool Diploma or GED; Associate’s Degree in Construction Technology or relatedfield of study is preferred
  • 8-11 years of MDOT construction or related LAPexperience
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook,and PowerPoint
  • MDOT Field Manager certification and experience
  • MDOT Computerized Office Technician certification andexperience
  • Michigan Concrete Association Level 1 Concrete FieldTesting Technician
  • Michigan Certified Aggregate Inspection TechnicianCertification – Level 1 is preferred
  • Michigan Certified Density Control TechnicianCertification is preferred
  • Nuclear Gauge Operator Safety Training Certificationis preferred
  • EGLE Storm Water Management – Construction SiteCertification
  • EGLE Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control (SESC) –Plan Review and Design Certification
  • ICET Michigan Certified Bituminous QA/QC TechnicianCertification is preferred
  • Good interpersonal, communication, and conceptualthinking skills
  • Possess strong math skills, including algebra andgeometry for determining areas and volumes
  • Willingness to commute to construction projects invarying locations, work in all weather conditions, varying shifts, and weekends
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work independently for periods of time
  • Ability to prioritize project assignments to meetcompeting deadlines
  • Attention to detail and effective decision making andorganizational skills
  • Ability to provide support to local office, as well asavailability to occasionally travel to other offices
  • Ability to assist in developing strategic approachesand concepts
  • MicroStation / AutoCAD drafting experience ispreferred
  • MDOT Final Project Closeout experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of all necessary forms and paperworkrequired for MDOT work
