Watertown, Massachusetts

Join us as we work to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.

We are looking for a Design Architect to play a leading role for our Clinicals product, an award-winning electronic health record and medical practice management solution. In this role, you'll shape the information architecture and craft the overall experience for athenaClinicals. As a senior individual contributor, you will partner with cross-functional leaders in engineering and product management to drive user-centric progress on strategic initiatives. As the team's expert designer, you will compose compelling product vision, steer execution, and act as an inspiring product leader.

Our Clinicals product provides tools that enable our clients to care for patients and document that care easily and effectively. We're working to turn a complex and sometimes cumbersome process into a more intuitive, satisfying, and empowering experience for physicians and support staff.

A successful candidate will have a track record of framing complex, wicked problems and working cross-functionally to identify meaningful solutions. If you will be a champion for our users and you want to apply your skills to ambitious work, we'd love for you to join the team.

Responsibilities
  • Lead efforts to understand complex problem spaces that are among the gnarliest challenges encountered in healthcare.
  • Define solution frameworks and conceptual direction to align work across multiple product divisions.
  • Influence the roadmap for teams across the Clinicals product organization, tying incremental real-world improvements to a shared long-term vision.
  • Design and conduct experiments with end users to explore potential future product directions.
  • Build cross-functional alignment that extends up and down the organization, ensuring both leadership buy-in of planned solutions and a sense of ownership among the teams that will deliver the work.
  • Coach and mentor other members of the design team and act as an expert design resource for athenahealth at large.
  • Advance UX as a practice at athenahealth through your thought leadership.
  • Serve as an athenahealth ambassador to the larger User Experience community by publishing thoughts on design best practice and process.

Qualifications
  • You have 10+ years of experience creating enterprise software services and products.
  • You have demonstrated your ability to lead (directly or indirectly) other talented designers, pushing them to deliver their very best work.
  • You have a MA or MS, BA or BS in User Experience, Interaction Design, HCI, Library Science or similar, or have developed your expertise through equivalent professional experience.
  • You are experienced in delivering opportunity frameworks, information architecture, service blueprints, interaction models, task flows, and wireframes as needed to clearly communicate complex ideas.
  • You have extensive experience melding a design thinking approach with agile development processes, including a keen understanding of how to empower a design organization by reconciling any frictions between the two methodologies.
  • You are passionate about improving healthcare, and have experience in the domain or in domains of similar complexity.
