epocrates is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead our data strategy and platform.

epocrates, the most trusted medical reference application in the US, serving as an indispensable daily tool used by 50% of the doctors in the US.

The Team: The epocrates R&D team tackles a variety of complex challenges every day to ensure that our entire suite of products and tools are constantly evolving and improving to meet our users' needs.

Our current tech stack includes native iOS/Android apps, web properties, a suite of in-house and third-party content publishing tools, and a commercial advertising platform. Our multi-disciplinary team of SMEs -- front and backend engineers, product management veterans, medical doctors and PharmDs, visual designers, UX researchers, data experts, and more -- all work together so that it's easy for health care providers to make excellent clinical decisions for their patients using epocrates.

Position Summary

epocrates is looking for someone who has demonstrated experience in a leadership role as well as deep technical expertise in machine learning, data science, and data analytics. You will guide the development of our product roadmap and direct strategy for our data science capabilities by collaborating with data analytics, data warehousing, product, and engineering teams. Using data, you'll help to develop products that give our customers insight into how users are interacting and consuming medical reference data as well as driving in-app personalization, content, and user facing features.

Job Responsibilities
  • Build and lead a team of data scientists developing advanced analytical solutions that include predictive analytics, statistical modeling, and optimization techniques that can be used to create additional value through data assets and analytics; establish this as a strategic advantage for epocrates.
  • Provide technical leadership and direct data warehousing strategy including managing a data warehousing team.
  • Develop and execute on a strategy for customizing and personalizing our in-app experience using behavioral and user data that drives engagement and user satisfaction in multiple end user product areas such as search, continuing medical education, news, advertising, and content.
  • Evaluate machine learning and data science opportunities across the business, communicate strategic and business value, select, prioritize, and drive execution on projects.
  • Identify and develop business opportunities and commercial products where data can be used to power data analytic offerings, data feeds, and other data products.
  • Evaluate the latest tools and technologies and determine how to incorporate them in our data platform.
  • Own and drive our streaming data pipeline to support real-time analytics, machine learning, next best engagement, and other big data and real-time capabilities.
  • Advise executive leadership and develop overall strategy, long term goal planning, and vision for data assets.
  • Develop best practices, evaluate and choose technology, continuously learn, teach, and mentor the data teams.

Qualifications:
  • Commercial business acumen and proven experience in a leadership role directing data strategy.
  • This should include 5+ years of relevant experience in Data Science, Analytics, Business Intelligence, and Machine Learning.
  • Proficiency in a range of statistical modeling, large data analysis, data extraction, loading, and transformation, as well as development and deployment of machine learning and predictive models.
  • Familiarity with tools and languages such as R, Python, Spark, Keras, H20, PyTorch, and TensorFlow. Recent hands-on experience would be a plus.
  • Knowledge of data warehousing and ETL/ELT concepts.
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills.
