*Job Summary*

The *Special Education School Teacher* is responsible for implementing the school’s instructional program for Grades K through 12.

*Principal Accountabilities*

(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract.)

* Assess students’ skills to determine their needs and to develop teaching plans

* Adapt lessons to meet the needs of students

* Maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning while teaching assigned subject or class according to adopted curricula and standards.

* Track Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students who have reasonable accommodation needs.

* Plan, organize, and assign activities that are specific to each student’s abilities

* Implement IEPs, assess students’ performance, and track their progress

* Update IEPs throughout the school year to reflect students’ progress and goals

* Discuss student’s progress with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators

* Supervise and mentor teacher assistants who work with students with disabilities

* Prepare and help students transition from grade to grade and after graduation

* Maintains communication concerning individual progress with parents and school administration.

* Corrects assignments and evaluates student progress in timely fashion.

* Maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning while teaching assigned subject or class according to adopted curricula and standards.

* Establishes a daily lesson plan following curriculum guidelines and adopted standards; prepares necessary materials; implements plan.

* Maintains student discipline and fosters positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.

* Utilizes motivational tools and information technology to stimulate students.

* Maintains communication concerning individual progress with parents and school administration.

* Contributes to curriculum development and revision.

* Corrects assignments and evaluates student progress in timely fashion.

* Must participate in professional development activities as necessary to maintain licensure.

* Instruction in the classroom will be commensurate with the school’s stated philosophy, objectives and purposes.

* Provides guidance and advice to students on educational matters and on his/her further education and future careers; providing information on sources of more expert advice.

* Communicates and works with other members of the school staff and parents/guardians to ensure the best interest of students.

* Reviews and evaluates teaching and learning strategies, methodologies and programs to ensure the lessons are in line with the curriculum guidelines

* Ensures high standards of professional practice and quality of teaching and learning of the subject(s).

* Cognizant of all rules and regulations in school handbooks.

* Performs other related duties as assigned.

*Knowledge & Skills*

* Requires initiative, perception and a broad knowledge of human behavior to understand the learning style of the individual students.

* Requires solid pedagogy in educational planning, instructional delivery, classroom management, and assessment.

* Communication skills: discuss student’s needs and performances with general education teachers, parents, and administrators.

* Critical Thinking Skills: assess students’ progress and use that information to adapt lessons to help them learn.

* Patience. Working with students with special needs and different abilities can be difficult. Special education teachers should be patient with each student, as some may need the instruction given aloud, at a slower pace, or in writing.

*Experience & Education*

* Two (2) to five (5) years’ experience teaching in an accredited school system; three (3) years special education in an accredited school system preferred.

* Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a related discipline required; Masters degree preferred.

* Current teacher certification in one of the 50 United States for grade level or subject area.

* Additional endorsement to augment major certification area is desired.

* Advance placement certification preferred as applicable.

*Physical Requirements/Working Environment*

* Position requires moderate lifting and bending.

* Required to monitor students indoors and sometimes outdoors in a hot and humid climate.

*Travel*

* Occasional stateside travel.
