Overview

Environmental Specialists assists in developing/improving Environmental Programs. Will be assisting with the

implementation of hazardous material and hazardous waste programs in industrial areas; inspecting work areas for

potential environmental hazards or non-compliances and recommending abatement actions for identified environmental

deficiencies.

MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:

 

1. Monitors use of Environmental Management practices in the workplace.

2. Advises workforce on proper environmental compliance issues and prepares inspection reports;

3. Observes environmental compliance during workplace visits.

4. Updates relative data bases and reports.

5. Develops environmental training lesson plans; presents environmental, safety and health training.

6. Presents environmental portion of newcomers orientation training.

7. Participates in Environmental Working Groups.

8. Sets a good example to the workforce by following all ESH regulations, policies, procedures and practices.

9. Keeps work area and equipment clean and orderly.

10. Other duties or assignments as required.

 

MATERIAL & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:

 

Personal computer, printers, calculator, copy machines, scanners, FAX machines, phones, and other general office

equipment. Operates non-tactical vehicles as required.

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

 

Job assignments will involve the conduct of work in and out-of-doors areas with exposure to extreme climatic conditions.

May work in areas where a potential exists for exposure to physical, chemical, and biological agents. Duties will involve

the conduct of work in the outdoors with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions including frequent dust

storms, and high temperatures up to 130 degrees in the summer months. Employee use of Personal Protective

Equipment (PPE) in certain areas is required. Such PPE includes but is not limited to head, foot, hand, torso, respiratory,

vision and hearing protective devices. Must comply with all fire, safety and post policies. Job may require overnight travel

and may be located in areas considered high risk according to the Department of State.

 

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

 

Work requires regular and recurring physical exertion related to frequent inspections and site visits, to include standing,

walking, bending, or climbing. While performing duties of this job, will require lifting up to 35 lbs.; stooping; climbing;

prolonged standing; prolonged sitting.

 


Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Certifications: One year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required.

 

High School + a minimum 6 years OR Associates Degree + 2-3 years experience as environmental technician,

auditor/hazardous waste coordinator, 40-hour HAZWOPER certified desired, military experience desired; familiar with

EPA and DoD environmental regulations, including the OEBGD. Military background and working knowledge of US

Army Environmental, Safety and Health regulations, guidance documents and directives beneficial. C ollege level

environmental related courses preferred.

Certification: Hazwoper, RCRA, DOT, FA/CPR certifications desirable

MUST BE FULENT AND LITERATE IN ENGLISH at a level to the extent of reading and understanding written orders,

training instructions and manuals, composing reports, conveying complete information and conversing with US Military

(Army) and contracting personnel.

 

Experience:

 

High School + a minimum 6 years OR Associates Degree + 2-3 years experience as environmental technician,

auditor/hazardous waste coordinator. Working knowledge of EPA, OSHA, DOT and Military environmental requirements.

 

Skills:

 

1. Prefer an individual with at least two to five years experience to include environmental compliance, related OSHA

compliance, and hazardous waste management and pollution prevention, knowledge of EPA and DOD environmental

regulations, including the OEBGD.

2. Excellent communication and writing skills are also required along with a working knowledge of computer operations

to include spreadsheet, database, word processing and presentation applications. Must have strong ability to work

independent and as a member of a robust team.
