We seek a dedicated Equipment Operator who will be responsible for the safe operation of heavy equipment (front-end loader, excavator, forklift, sweeper, etc.) used at the Holliston Transfer Station located in Holliston, MA, to receive, stockpile, process, prepare for transport and load municipal solid waste into transfer trailers, or other similar vehicles.

The individual fulfilling this role must be flexible to work shifts as assigned, handle special projects assigned by a supervisor and any other related duties.

The duties herein are intended to describe the general nature of the work performed by this position and are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of responsibilities, duties and skills.   • Operate various pieces of equipment and machinery to facilitate the receipt, stockpile, process and load municipal solid waste into transfer trailers.
  • Maintain effective equipment checks (pre and post operations)
  • Perform equipment maintenance and repairs as instructed by maintenance department and transfer station supervisory personnel.
  • Maintain various items at the transfer station for continual operation i.e., sprinkler system, radiation monitors, alarm system heating and cooling system etc.
  • Obtain information regarding material entering transfer station by greeting customers, visually confirming contents are appropriate for the transfer station.
  • Provide instructions to customer for proper location of disposal on tipping floor
  • Perform inspections effectively and accurately in accordance with state mandated Waste Ban Regulations.
  • Ensure that customers and employees conduct all business in a safe manner and wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Perform facility inspection checks as assigned by a Supervisor.
  • Follow and enforce all required Covanta safety policies and procedures.

Position Requirements

We are seeking candidates with following credentials:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Mechanical, equipment or trade school certificate or training a plus
  • Minimum of 1 year of prior experience working at sites regulated by OSHA, solid waste handling facilities experience preferred
  • Prior experience with heavy equipment equipment used at the facility to process refuse and support baler operations, including, but not limited to forklifts, excavators, front-end loaders, and sweepers
  • Valid State Driver’s license.
  • Massachusetts State Hydraulics license type 2-A, 1-C is required

Better for the Environment

Energy-from-waste is a sustainable waste disposal solution that is environmentally superior to landfills. It is a source of clean energy that reduces overall greenhouse gas emissions and is considered renewable under many state and federal laws. EfW projects also lower the risk of groundwater contamination and conserve land.

Covanta supports recycling and programs that enable communities to recycle as much as possible. As part of the EfW process, we recover over 400,000 tons of metal annually for recycling that would have otherwise been lost in landfills. Our modern Energy-from-Waste Facilities are an important element of an integrated municipal solid system that maximizes the recovery of energy and recycles metals while also minimizing the environmental impacts of materials remaining after recycling.

Studies have shown that communities that have an EfW facility typically enjoy higher recycling rates than the national average.1 Why? Processing MSW at Energy-from-Waste facilities for energy generation (steam or electricity) offsets, on average, one ton of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for every ton of waste processed. This occurs by avoiding energy generated from fossil fuels, methane produced by decomposing trash at landfills (methane is an extremely potent GHG - about 25 times more than carbon dioxide) and recovering metals for recycling.
