The Perioperative Nursing Assistant II applies proficient knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to communicate appropriately and perform delegated patient care assistant tasks under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Assists with the physical preparation of the patient and physical environment prior to a surgical procedure being performed. Orients and trains new PNA's and demonstrates ability to troubleshoot problems and prioritize multiple requests for assistance. Practices Relationship Centered care in concert with the values of The Methodist Hospital System.



  1. Provides assistant level care to Surgical Services patients within unit specific defined limits. (EF)
  2. Assists in orientation and training of new PNAs as assigned. (EF)
  3. Transports patients to and from assigned room and assists with the preparation and positioning of the patient prior to surgical procedure. (EF)
  4. Assists with preparation of the physical environment prior to surgical procedure, cleaning the room using prescribed sterile techniques, ensuring the maintenance of a clean and organized environment. (EF)
  5. Checks and maintains appropriate levels of cleaning supplies and other supplies such as surgical scrubs, masks, etc. for the department.
  6. Follows channels of communication for effective problem solving. (EF)
  7. Maintains confidentiality of information to which he/she has access. (EF)
  8. Reports observations, conditions and problems of patient to the licensed nurse. (EF)
  9. Transports specimens, cultures, blood products, and body fluids to laboratory using universal precautions. (EF)
  10. Able to prioritize multiple simultaneous requests for assistance. (EF)
  11. Demonstrates the components of the I CARE values statement.
  12. Demonstrates Service Pride standards (smiles and makes eye contact, greets each patient and visitor, displays appropriate body language at all times, honors diversity).
  13. Follows all safety rules while on the job. Reports all accidents promptly and corrects minor safety hazards. Communicates with peers and management regarding any hazards identified in the workplace.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.


Must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma/GED or its equivalent in work experience.
12 months related (PNA, PCA, Transporter, EVS) experience in a relevant healthcare setting is required of which at least 6 months were in a PNA role or completion of Perioperative Nursing Assistant course may be considered in lieu of PNA specific experience.
American Heart Association BLS required

Must be able to write and speak effectively in English
